Research at IFIB focuses on understanding selected fundamental cellular mechanisms, and especially on how these mechanisms are altered in disease.
Cell engagement: We study the interactions between pathogens such as viruses or bacteria and cellular partners in order to describe mechanisms of engagement of the cell, and to provide a basis for vaccine and drug design.
Cell fate: We aim to understand cell fate decisions that are induced upon cellular stress, including distinct forms of cell death as well as premature cellular senescence and mitotic catastrophe. Understanding these different cellular outcomes is important for tumor therapy and many degenerative diseases.
Cell regulation: Analysis of mechanisms of how specific cellular messenger RNAs are regulated by associated proteins to achieve fine tuning of expression in time and space.
