The University of Marburg, founded in 1527, offers a variety of excellent programs of study for around 22,000 students and confronts the important topics of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of sciences.
The Centre of Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO) and the department of Chemistry, research group of Prof. Dr. Peter Graumann is currently accepting applications for a
Doctoral Researcher/PhD
The position is offered for a period of 3 years. The starting date is February 1st 2025 or later. The position is part-time (50 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 50 %).
The Graumann working group is concerned with the elucidation of spatio-temporal processes in bacterial cells using the model bacterium Bacillus subtilis. The project in question is concerned with resolving the molecular mechanism of DNA uptake and integration into the chromosome in competent bacterial cells, using the highest possible resolution by single molecule tracking, as well as biochemical and genetic methods.
Activities and responsibilities
- scientific services in research
- development of an original research project with high independance
- investigation of the function of DNA Type IV pili during DNA uptake from the environment in Bacillus subtilis
- characterization of the interaction of DNA with the DNA uptake machinery and with recombination proteins at single molecule level and in real time by single molecule tracking (SMT) fluorescence microscopy
- multidisciplinary collaboration in an international environment
- international communication in research by publications and participation in conferences
- opportunity for aiding in student courses and teaching in seminars for students
The position is limited to a time period deemed adequate for the completion of a doctoral degree. As part of the assigned duties, there will be ample opportunity to conduct the independent scientific research necessary for the completion of a doctorate. The limitation complies to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.
Qualification profile
- MSc-degree or equivalent in the field of biologiy, biochemistry or chemistry with a focus on biochemistry, biotechnology and/or microbiology
- experience in working with different microorganisms
- ability to carry out molecular biological (cloning) and biochemical experiments (protein purfication)
- interest in or experience with cell biological techniques (e.g. super resolution fluorescence microscopy)
- knowledge on computer programming or at least interest in learning such skills (e.g. MATLAB, Python, or others)
The motivation to gain your own scientific qualification (a doctoral project in the field of biochemistry/mocrobiology with a focus on cell biology) is expected.
Philipps-Universität supports the professional development of young scientists through the offers of the Marburg Research Academy (MARA), the International Office and the position for university didactics and the possibility to participate in the graduate program International Max Planck Research School IMPRS-Mic, the Center for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO) and the Research Training Group (RTG 2937) Microbial Nucleotide Metabolism.
We offer
- state ticket for free use of public transport in Hesse (Landesticket)
- flexible working hours and part-time employment
- teleworking / mobile working
- company pension scheme (VBL)
We support women and strongly encourage them to apply. In areas where women are underrepresented, female applicants will be preferred in case of equal qualifications. As a certified family-friendly university, we support our employees in balancing family and career. A reduction of working time is possible. Applicants with a disability as discribed in SGB IX (§ 2 Abs. 2, 3) will be preferred in case of equal qualifications. Application and interview costs can not be refunded.
Please apply using the application-button by January 5th, 2025.
